Young Chef competition

For the second year in succession if you happened to be walking along Steyne Road one Saturday morning recently and you were captivated by an aroma of five star cooking it may just have been from the Young Chefs Competition which the Seaford Rotary Club organises each year for the students at Seaford Head School.
The competition was open to pupils between the ages of 11 and 17 and each chef was required to cook, in one and a half hours, a healthy meal for two people consisting of a main course and dessert and costing not more than £15.
The mouth-watering results were then judged by Steve Anderson, co- owner of Ollivers Restaurant in the town and former professional chefs Omero Galucci and Sonia Duncton who both travelled from the Guildford area. The cost of ingredients was covered by Seaford Rotary Club who also provided prizes for the winners.
This was the first time most of the competitors had entered a cooking competition and the main comment from the judges was the high standard they had all reached, particularly as the oldest was only thirteen. Each one had produced at least one outstanding dish which made judging very difficult.
The winner this year was Ben Philipson and the runner up Martha Jones, both of whom will now go forward early in 2019 to the next stage of the national Rotary competition where they will be required to cook a three-course meal in two hours.
Paul Vaesen, Chairman of the Club’s Youth Services Committee congratulated all the chefs on their achievements and thanked Mrs. Ursula Duffy from the Seaford Head school and the judges for all their help. Certificates were presented to all the competitors and prizes to the winners by Seaford Rotary Club Vice President Keith Ross.
